Patient discussions
Physicians should be aware of the triggers of cocaine use (e.g., staying awake, work or academic performance, weight loss, chemsex), and be prepared to talk about how infrequent or social use may progress to cocaine use disorder.[27] People who may be at risk of cocaine use disorder should be encouraged to avoid friends and family who use illicit substances, and should be encouraged to partake in activities with others who are pursuing recovery from substance use disorders.
Patients should be advised to seek support groups. SAMHSA: find support Opens in new window FRANK: find drug and alcohol support near you Opens in new window
Advise nursing mothers that cocaine passes into breast milk, and can cause acute intoxication in the infant.[27] They should bottle feed for 24 hours after cocaine use and express and throw away their breast milk during that period. If this is not possible/sustainable then the woman should be advised against breast-feeding.[47]
