Primary prevention
There are no commonly accepted preventive measures because infection is not highly contagious, and it is ubiquitous. There is a strong consensus that vaccine development is needed with the goal of preventing IM and Epstein-Barr virus-associated cancers. Despite several vaccine trials in humans, no vaccine currently exists.[30][31] Recombinant viral vector vaccines, virus-like particle vaccines, and viral envelope glycoprotein vaccines are in development.[32]
