Patient discussions
Zinc is an important nutrient, and deficiency can cause problems with the immune system, skin, gastrointestinal tract, and nerves. In order to avoid these problems it is important to take zinc supplementation as suggested by the clinician. It may also be helpful to increase dietary intake of zinc through the consumption of meats and shellfish. Additionally, certain foods such as beans and whole grains can bind zinc, limiting its absorption, thus it may be better to eat them at a separate time to foods high in zinc.
