Primary prevention

Stopping smoking and avoiding alcohol are paramount in the primary prevention of laryngeal cancer.

Secondary prevention

Patients with one head and neck malignancy are at an increased risk for a second cancer, particularly if they continue to smoke.[71] Relative risk of head and neck cancer reduces to 0.7 after stopping smoking for 1 to 4 years, and reaches the level of never smokers after 20 years.[77] Abstinence from alcohol also reduces the risk of developing head and neck cancer.[77]
