Emerging treatments

OnabotulinumtoxinA

OnabotulinumtoxinA (botulinum toxin type A) has been found to be an effective preventive treatment for migraine.[76][77] There are several reports in the literature about this treatment being promising in chronic cluster headache.[77][78] A randomized placebo-controlled study is under way.[79]

Psilocybin

Psilocybin is an indoleamine hallucinogen that has been used by some patients with cluster headache. Infrequent and non-hallucinogenic doses have been reported to be efficacious.[1][80] Clinical trials are under way.[81]

Other calcitonin gene-related peptide antagonists

Other monoclonal antibodies against calcitonin gene-related peptide are being investigated for cluster headache. A phase 3 trial of eptinezumab for prevention for episodic cluster headache is under way.[82] Phase 3 trials of fremanezumab were terminated early.[1]
