Prognosis
The natural course of mild disease can be benign and controlled with medical intervention. Limited moderate disease requires more aggressive medical and possible surgical therapy for adequate control. Poorly controlled moderate disease can progress to more severe disease. Complete remission from symptoms is unlikely with medical therapy alone. Care should be taken to evaluate for evidence of systemic infection. Consultation with plastic surgery is advisable for moderate to severe disease. Long-standing severe disease can result in lymphedema and development of squamous cell carcinoma. The impact on patients' quality of life can be profound.[75][76]
