Patient discussions

Specific instructions include avoiding trauma to the lesion surface that might lead to ulceration or bleeding, postoperative or laser therapy instructions, local wound care instructions, and avoiding colonization. An important aspect of care is patient reassurance about the generally benign nature of hemangioma, and education about its potential complications. Although most of these lesions will undergo involution, there is the possibility of residual changes in nearly one half of those afflicted, with persistent scarring, skin atrophy and redundancy, discoloration, and telangiectasia. A useful social defense for patients who are particularly sensitive to comments about visible hemangiomas is to turn the conversation to the euphemistic term "birthmark" or "beauty mark."
