Screening

Older patients should be screened for orthostatic hypotension (OH) before they start medications that can worsen or induce OH and syncope.

Patients with disorders known to affect the autonomic nervous system should have careful and frequent evaluation of their blood pressure both supine and standing. Diagnosing OH is important because it can be treated, and it is associated with numerous potential adverse outcomes if left untreated.
