Prognosis

Childhood constipation continues beyond puberty in up to one third of children followed up beyond that age.[65] Long-term prognosis depends on the degree of megarectum and the presence of other illnesses, particularly neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism spectrum disorder, or major psychosocial problems. One study found an increased risk of persistent constipation in children who developed constipation in early infancy and who have a family history of constipation.[66]
