Primary prevention

Hairy tongue can be prevented by improvement of oral hygiene, decreased tobacco use, and decreased consumption of coffee and tea, which may prevent the retention of keratin responsible for the appearance of hairy tongue.

There are no preventive measures for fissured and geographic tongue.

Secondary prevention

To prevent recurrence of hairy tongue, tobacco use and consumption of coffee and tea should be decreased and oral hygiene improved. Management of existing oral discomfort or hyposalivation should be applied.
