Patient discussions

Limb rest and elevation of affected lower extremities may help to reduce swelling.

Give advice about:[21]

  • Possible adverse effects of antibiotics

  • How long healing should take

  • Seeking medical help:

    • If symptoms worsen quickly or significantly

    • If symptoms do not improve within 2 to 3 days

  • What patients can do to prevent a recurrence, including helping to manage their risk factors (see the Risk factors section under Epidemiology).

Proper cleaning and covering of all wounds can help to prevent cellulitis. Patients with diabetes should pay particular attention to caring for their feet and preventing trauma. Treating tinea pedis (athlete's foot) can help to prevent cellulitis. Wearing support stockings and other prescribed measures to reduce lower-extremity swelling can minimise risk of cellulitis.
