Prognosis
Prognosis
In general, the more severe the injury, the less favourable the prognosis. A typical upper root brachial plexus injury with excellent reconstruction can often result in outcomes approaching normal function. However, a patient with total root avulsion of C5-T1 will be fortunate to obtain basic elbow flexion, shoulder stability, simple grasp, and protective sensibility of the hand.
Splinting and regular physiotherapy can help minimise long-term stiffness and contracture formation, especially in the hand.
