Monitoring

Patients should be reviewed no later than 8 weeks after starting treatment to ensure symptoms have resolved.[4] Once healing has occurred, patients should be advised to increase their fibre and fluid intake. They should be warned that anal fissure can return, especially if treated by non-surgical means. If they experience symptoms, they should contact their doctor and begin treatment again with topical ointments. This will lead to healing in a large proportion of patients. If healing does not occur, or the patient desires more definitive treatment, surgery should be considered.[16]
