Even if symptoms are not present, the virus may be spread to sexual partners. It is important to disclose herpes status to sexual partners. Daily antivirals and consistent and correct use of condoms reduces the risk of sexual transmission of genital herpes. Sexual activity should be avoided when prodromal symptoms or genital lesions are present. Additionally, pregnant women should alert their healthcare provider if they have been diagnosed with genital herpes, because the virus can be transmitted to the baby during birth.[48]
