Monitoring

Following diagnosis, children with ASD are reviewed regularly by experienced paediatricians or child psychiatrists in order to perform surveillance for comorbid disorders and discuss educational progress. The frequency of review is dependent on the difficulties that a child and/or parent experiences.

Specifically, progress with language and social progress is monitored, in addition to whether educational placement and approaches are likely to be suitable. Parents require access to clinicians to help them assess the efficacy of new treatments, approaches, or interventions. Clinical history-taking about possible epilepsy, sleep difficulties, and psychiatric difficulties (e.g., anxiety, depression, or ADHD), is required.
