Virilisation that appears over a short period of time should arouse suspicion regarding a tumour of either adrenal or ovarian origin.
Patients with an adrenal tumour may also have accompanying features of Cushing's syndrome. In addition to hormonal measurements, these subjects will require imaging of the abdomen and pelvis (computed tomography of the abdomen/pelvis and/or transvaginal ultrasound of the ovaries).
