Patient discussions
No specific guidelines exist about when to recommend an athlete's return to sport activity. The regular recommendation to restrain from strenuous physical activity for 3 to 4 weeks (up to 8 weeks in some patients) and until symptoms resolve applies to athletes as well. After that time, athletes, especially those returning to contact or collision sport, may need ultrasound evaluation of the spleen.[99] If no splenomegaly is detected, a return to sports could be allowed with reduced activity for at least 1 week, and after that to full activity if well tolerated.
It should be noted that persons with recent illness should not donate blood or solid organs.
