Screening
Screening for zinc deficiency is not widely accepted, even though this condition has been shown to be prevalent in multiple populations and zinc supplementation may improve health outcomes. Depending on local epidemiology and resources, either testing of serum zinc levels or empirical supplementation may be reasonable.[54]
Zinc deficiency in pregnancy has been convincingly associated with adverse fetal outcomes, but routine supplementation has not yet been shown to be effective and finding ways to improve women's overall nutritional status, particularly in low‐income areas, will do more to improve the health of mothers and babies than supplementing pregnant women with zinc alone.[55]
