Flap-based procedures are associated with a moderate risk of wound dehiscence. The vast majority of patients with wound dehiscence can be managed with conservative management and local wound care.

Most haematomas will resolve spontaneously. Haematomas rarely require drainage and should be limited to those resulting in skin necrosis or wound breakdown.

Seromas will resolve spontaneously. Drainage should be limited to patients with evidence of infection.

Wound infections should be drained under local anaesthetic or in the operating room. Patients with cellulitis or immunosuppression should be treated with antibiotics.
