Primary prevention

Successful prevention strategies for kwashiorkor do not exist. Supplementation of a vulnerable population with foods rich in protein, lipid, and micro-nutrients, or supplementing with antioxidants, does not prevent kwashiorkor.[24][39]

Secondary prevention

Blindness resulting from corneal ulceration is now a rare occurrence owing to the routine administration of vitamin A (retinol) and the recognition and treatment of xerophthalmia at an early stage.
