Complications
At early gestations, the likelihood of severe morbidity and death is high. At gestations under 26 weeks, overt neurological damage occurs in about 1 in 4 babies, resulting in morbidities such as cerebral palsy, blindness, or deafness.[159] Severe disability occurs in about 1 in 10 babies at 26 weeks’ gestation, and about 1 in 3 babies at 22 weeks’ gestation.[1] Retinopathy of prematurity is related to oxygen therapy needed to treat the respiratory distress. However, 50% of these babies will not have severe problems.[159] There is an increased rate of behavioural problems and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in children born prematurely.
Beta agonists no longer seem the best choice of tocolytic as they may cause maternal adverse effects that lead to discontinuation of therapy, and the US Food and Drug Administration cautions against the off-label use of terbutaline for premature labour.[139][141]

Beta agonists may cause the following adverse effects in the mother: chest pain, palpitations, dyspnoea, tremor, nausea, vomiting, and headache.
