This was known as “Moore’s Law”. Recently, our technology is no longer achieving higher densities as we scale to smaller features sizes first with NAND Flash and now with SRAM and DRAM. New techniques known as Beyond Moore are required to continue to build faster and more complex computers. The incorporation of group IIIB elements such as scandium (Sc) can transform conventional III-nitride semiconductors to be ferroelectric. This new class of ferroelectric nitride semiconductors can be seamlessly integrated with the well-established III-nitride and Si electronics with promising applications in high power, high frequency, high temperature electronics, as well as memory and logic devices. Moreover, ferroelectric ScAlN exhibits significantly enhanced piezoelectric and nonlinear optical response compared to AlN, which makes it attractive for high frequency resonators and filters and nonlinear optical processes. In this talk I will present recent advances of ferroelectric III-nitride semiconductors, including epitaxial growth, the underlying physics of their unusual structural, optical, electrical, and ferroelectric properties, as well as their emerging device applications. Zetian Mi is a Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. His teaching and research interests are in the areas of semiconductor nanotechnology, optoelectronics, and photonics. Prof. Mi has received the Science and Engineering Award from W. M. Keck Foundation in 2020, the IEEE Photonics Society Distinguished Lecturer Award in 2020, the David E. Liddle Research Excellence Award in 2021, the IEEE Nanotechnology Council Distinguished Lecturer Award in 2023, the ISCS Quantum Devices Award in 2024, and the Rexford E. Hall Innovation Excellence Award in 2024. Prof. Mi currently serves as the Editor-in-Chief of Progress in Quantum Electronics and the Serial Editor of Semiconductors and Semimetals. He served as the Vice President for Conferences of IEEE Photonics Society from 2022 to 2023. Prof. Mi co-founded NS Nanotech Inc. and NX Fuels Inc. The NIST Boulder facility houses five major laboratories, each of which are are made up of multiple Divisions. This tour is for the Physical Measurement Laboratory (PLM). PLM has 11 divisions. The Divisions are further broken down into groups. We will have time to visit four groups. Two are in the the Time and Frequency Division. They are the - Time and Frequency Division: Neutral Atom Optical Clocks Group (which my include the atomic clock), and - Time and Frequency Division: Quantum & Nonlinear Nanophotonics Group The plan is to visit two additional groups, but NIST PLM has not yet settled on which those will be. NIST is a U.S. government agency and requires that all visitors are screened in advance. Due to the added complexity of screening foreign nationals, this tour will be limited to U. S. citizens. In addition, because some of the labs we plan to visit are not large, the size of our group will be limited to 25 members. I need to provide NIST with a list of attendees one week prior to the event for screening purposes. That is why registration ends on January 6th. Please note we need each guest’s first and last name as it appears on their I.D. NIST has provided the following logistical information: Directions starting on Hwy 36: Merge onto U.S. Hwy. 36 West to Boulder. Stay on US-36 into Boulder and take the Baseline Rd. exit. Stay left on the exit ramp and turn left (west) on Baseline Rd. Travel under the US-36 overpass, to the first stop light, at 27th Way. The mission of Colorado Computer Museum is to collect, conserve, and exhibit all kinds of information processing technology, preserve the knowledge of it, illuminate its effect on society and foster understanding of the underlying science. Today, the museum has collected over 3000 artifacts. Our tagline is "A Hands-On History of Information Technology," indicating that we value hands-on interaction. By "information technology," we mean any technology that processes information, not just literal computer systems. Addressing the complex needs of such an incident includes several critical tasks: protecting potential crime scenes; managing resources and personnel effectively; conducting comprehensive searches and recovering remains; understanding relevant legal and regulatory issues; identifying and returning remains accurately; and ensuring that the families of the deceased are treated with compassion, dignity, and respect for their cultural and religious beliefs. Humans make decisions and solve problems using heuristics (“thinking fast”) or abstract approaches such as modeling (“thinking slow”). Artificial intelligence approaches can similarly use either heuristics that are related to correlation and categorization, or use models that are related to causation. Predictive Engineering, which melds engineering modeling with probabilistic thinking, aligns closely with causation and an aspect of artificial intelligence called Causal Learning. Issues with some artificial intelligence approaches will be explored, with real (and sometimes controversial and provocative) examples, and promising approaches encompassing causation /predictive engineering will be discussed.
