IEEE Candidates Forum

Meet the IEEE candidates.  

The voting membership of IEEE annually elect officers that serve on the top-tier IEEE governing bodies.  The 2023 IEEE Annual Election runs from 15-Aug through 2-October.  For more information on the open positions, candidates, and the overall election process see the IEEE Annual Election webpage. IEEE’s strength come from having strong volunteer leadership, with the support of all of our members.  To support member engagement in these important elections, Region 5 will be hosing three IEEE Candidate Forums, one each, for the following positions.

Eugene Freeman of Pikes Peak Section: Sharing Cybersecurity lesson at the Section Congress

I am attending Sections Congress in August and since one of the themes is “Reinvigoration of IEEE Organizations post Pandemic” I thought I would pass along my learnin from this engagement so far.

 

 Colorado Springs is a major hub for Cybersecurity activities due to the large presence of Military bases and local businesses that support them.

 In February of 2021 I was approached by Shawn Murray of Murray Security Services to give a short talk on our local IEEE activities.  Shawn is one of our affiliate partners. 

 The presentation was given at a monthly event called Cybersecurity First Friday, where members of the security community in Colorado Springs got together for information exchange and socialization.   Another focus for this event is to highlight local cybersecurity companies and how they are contributing to the ecosystem.  

 The event is hosted by Shawn and his co-host is Vincent Persichetti, from the Colorado Springs Chamber of Commerce and Economic Development Corporation.   

The attendance was virtual as this was mid pandemic.  One of the first things I picked up on was Vincent Persichetti, who ran the Zoom meeting, would break up the group into teams of 5 after the presentations for 10 minute socialization sessions where everyone would introduce themselves and discuss whatever was relevant to the theme of the meeting.  This turned out to be an enjoyable way to interact given pandemic limitations.

Once the pandemic restrictions began to lift, the monthly event moved to an Irish Pub in Downtown Colorado Springs.  One of the key draws of this meeting was folks with job openings mixed with those looking for employment.   The numbers continued to grow for the event and recently the venue was moved from the pub to the National Cybersecurity Center which has more room and easier parking.  Currently between 150-200 people attend each month.  Shawn and Vincent have been running this event for 5 years with continued success and growth.

One of the attendees I met was Joe Mallally, a manager and trainer of the LIFT program.   LIFT is a program sponsored by Goodwill Industries which provides scholarships for CompTIA certifications, A+, Network+,  Security +, and SySA+.  They have an impressive success story with folks who may have had to overcome some significant barriers to economic and personal independence.   In many cases these individuals obtained positions that doubled or tripled their salary as well as providing very satisfying work.  This effort is well in line with IEEE’s mission in using technology to benefit humanity.

I gave a reprise of my original presentation a few weeks ago.   I gave the folks at the First Friday Event for June, a summary of IEEE benefits called “IEEE Access to Tools.”   The audience was given information on accessing the wide variety of IEEE tools that are available to all, free of charge.   My feeling was that one way to attract more future members was to let them see the quality of the materials that are available to the general community.  The list included ComputingEdge, Cipher, Recorded Webinars on Security from our own Pikes Peak Chapter of the Computer Society, IEEE Innovation at work, IEEE Reach, and Oral Histories and Milestones.

I am looking forward to meeting many of you at Sessions Congress to discuss best practices to bring IEEE benefits to our communities as we transition to new models in the years to come.

Session Description : Industry professional engagement is a way to promote professional development activities that facilitates knowledge sharing. The main objective of industry professional engagement is to help cultivate the future generation engineers through mentoring, coaching and meaningful and engaging STEM outreach programs that advance the engineering profession and the state of art. Industry professional engagement requires an effective strategy to promote the value of IEEE that inspires collaboration with corporate and that aspires individual commitment. Thus, an engaged industry with a corporate culture that enables professional growth will further aspire individual professional commitment and engagement. The strategy to engage industry professionals is bottom-up. It is a grass root effort from the sections level, and it starts with awareness, implementations of various STEM programs and professional development program that provide enabling values for engagement of the local industries professionals.

R5 Conferences, Webinars and Professional Activities

The IEEE Denver Section is hosting the International Conference on Communications (ICC) which for 2024 which will take place in Denver Colorado (June 9-13, 2024).  ICC is one of the two IEEE ComSoc flagship conferences attracting a large number of contributors and attendants.  This year’s conference hosted 2000 attendees in Rome at ICC 2023

 

We invite you to submit a business, paper, workshop, tutorial proposal for consideration. See the attached Call for Papers (CFP) document.

CFPs for symposium, workshops and tutorials require technical papers that will be published in IEEE xPlore digital library.  Industry presentations, panels and workshops (not requiring publishing papers) will be solicited in the weeks ahead.

Given the convergence of computing and communication in our industry, we hope you will consider this opportunity and spread the word to your colleagues.

IEEE USA News

One example of IEEE-USA’s collaborations to support CHIPS in our region is the IEEE-USA Innovation Workforce and Research Conference (IWRC). IWRC will be held 13-15 September, 2023 in Little Rock, Arkansas. IEEE-USA is partnering with Arkansas’ NSF EPSCoR program to further connect industry, academia and government through the 2023 IEEE-USA through this three day event. IWRC will bring together stakeholders from academia, government, and industry to bridge the gap between research and commercially viable products. Experts from our region and across the country will discuss research grants, technology transfer programs, start-up funding, intellectual property, and a host of other topics related to inspiring and empowering true innovation in the Heartland and Delta Regions

We are very short on drivers right now. We have had to turn down some deployments due to the lack of qualified/certified drivers. If you are at all interested, please contact me. Region 5 is anticipating an IEEE-USA MOVE Vehicle to be stationed within the Region in the near future. https://move.ieeeusa.org To prepare for the truck, R5 is working with the larger MOVE team to train volunteers to operate and drive the trucks. Two trucks already exist, stationed in San Diego and Raleigh. The trucks are primarily focused on supporting disasters across the US in coordination with the American Red Cross. The trucks are also used for various STEM events. There are many opportunities to volunteer, truck drivers/operators, radio team, truck maintenance team, weather team, STEM volunteer, media coordination, etc. If you are interested, take a look at the MOVE web site, click on “volunteer” and enter your information.
