Western North Carolina Section Fall Report 2004 Section Officers: Chair: Fred Orland Vice Chair: Jim Erickson Secy/Treasurer: Torry Wickwire Student Activities Chair: Fred Orland PACE Chair: Doug Nuttall SECTION ACTIVITIES AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS: 1. We have monthly section meetings, except for June, July and August. So far this year we have had 5 Technical and 1 Educational meetings. We have 2 more meetings planned this year. 2. The EXCOM usually meets monthly. We have had 8 EXCOM meeting this year. 3. We have had 4 upgrades to Senior member this year. That represents 2.5% of our eligible members. 4. Our Web site has been totally revised and expanded to better serve our membership. Our webmaster has kept it updated and current. 5. We would like to extend our gratitude and congratulations to our section member Dr. Bob MOOG for his contributions to the music industry as a pioneer in the development of electronic music synthesizers. His accomplishments were recently featured in THE INSTITUTES Member Profiles. 6. Student Activities: a, We have 2 active Student Branches. Western Carolina University (WCU), and University of North Carolina at Asheville (UNC-A). We have developed a close working relationship with the Electrical Engineering Departments at both Universities. b, Both schools host a technical presentation of the senior student design projects for our section. c, We have scheduled for our October section meeting a "Engineer Career Round Table" discussion session at WCU. This is a new trial concept. The objective is to draw on the wealth of engineering career experience of our section members and provide the graduating students a heads up as to what to expect when they enter the engineering profession after graduation. The focus is on the Different Engineering Function / Roles and Professionalism. SECTION GOALS AND PLANS: 1. Conduct officer elections over the next 2 months. 2. Conduct the "Engineering Career Round Table" discussion session with the engineering student at UNC-A. 3. Develop several new programs with the University Students: a, Conduct "Design Reviews" of the students class projects. b, Begin a student mentoring program with the section members. c, Conduct "Engineering Professional and Ethics" sessions with the University students. 4. Initiate a Champaign to: a, Identify more volunteers to assist with our various new programs. b, Increase member participation in our meeting. 5. Continue to have a variety of technical meetings of interest to the section members.
