IT Expedition is an initiative led by volunteers from the joint chapter between the Computer and Communications Society and the IEEE student branch of the Universidad del Norte in Barranquilla, Colombia. This program marks the first time we offer half-day technical visits exclusively for our university chapter members, with two visits planned for this year. The first visit is scheduled for mid-April at the Barranquilla Mayor's Office, where participants will tour various departments within the Secretariat of Planning—particularly the IT department. During this visit, students will have the opportunity to observe operations related to IT support, server administration, and more, as well as receive a comprehensive presentation on the suite of software solutions developed at the Mayor's Office to address urban challenges. The second visit, planned for the second semester of the year between September and October, is to Claro, where members will gain further exposure to industry practices and the latest in technology. Te invitamos a participar en este curso teórico-práctico diseñado para estudiantes, docentes e investigadores interesados en el uso del pez cebra (Danio rerio) como modelo en estudios biológicos, biomédicos y toxicológicos. El pez cebra se ha convertido en una herramienta clave en la investigación científica por su fácil mantenimiento, rápido desarrollo embrionario y gran similitud genética con los seres humanos. Durante el curso, exploraremos desde aspectos básicos de su biología y manejo en laboratorio, hasta técnicas experimentales como microinyección, observación embrionaria, y creación de líneas transgénicas. Además, abordaremos temas de genética, biología molecular, aplicaciones en el estudio de enfermedades humanas y ensayos de toxicidad. In the first part of this talk, it will be shown that glancing angle deposition with magnetron sputtering is a user-friendly route to fabricate nanocolumnar thin films (NCTFs) of metals and metal-oxides in large areas of several square centimeters and above (scaling-up is feasible) in a single-step process. This is in clear contrast to nanolithography techniques. The development of the nanocolumnar morphology is the result of atomic shadowing, atomic diffusion, and surface relaxation. In the second part of the talk, several applications where NCTFs are of relevance will be described, discussing how and why these nanostructured materials can be used in functional devices. For energy and environment: as magnetic nanopillars with tailored properties, as nanostructured surfaces with photo-induced self-cleaning properties, as nanostructured layers to improve perovskite solar cells, and as black metal coatings in the visible range. For biomedicine: as antibacterial coatings in orthopedic implants, as bioelectrodes for electrical stimulation, as templates for chemical sensing by surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy, and as working electrodes in the electrochemical detection of molecules. Finally, for the aerospace industry: as nanostructured coatings that mitigate the undesirable multipactor effect (which can prevent the correct performance of radio frequency devices or even damage them).
