TITLE: Drivers and Enablers of Power Electronics Technology in Aerospace.
Program:
The increasing demand for high efficiency is driving the aerospace industry to apply electrical energy more extensively across a range of applications. Electrical power is being utilized in areas such as vertical and winged propulsion, flight and environmental controls, utility actuation, taxiing, de-icing, and anti-icing, each at varying levels of maturity. Additionally, the need for higher efficiency electrical circuits requires higher voltages, currents, and frequencies than current aerospace standards allow. The shift from using electric generators to batteries as energy storage devices is transforming power distribution to High Voltage DC (HVDC), replacing the conventional 400Hz and variable frequency AC distribution systems. These changes are driving new requirements for electrical system architecture and the associated components. These drivers necessitate enabling technologies from material sciences, high efficiency components , and advanced algorithms to address the challenges faced by the industry. This presentation will discuss the underlying physics behind the drivers listed above and some of the enabling technologies being researched to address the industry’s evolving demand
