ICICLE January 2025 Community Call: Learning Engineering Practices and Tools with Aaron Kessler, MIT and Shelly Blake-Plock, Yet Analytics
Happy 2025! The ICICLE monthly community call is January 15th at 12pm ET. ICICLEists, Aaron Kessler, Design SIG co-chair and Associate Director, Learning Sciences and Teaching at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Shelly Blake-Plock, former chair of ICICLE and Co-Founder, CEO at Yet Analytics, will share tools and practices on the design and implementation of learning engineering. The Learning Engineering Toolkit has several chapters describing tools in the learning engineering process. Practices and methods are being developed as the learning engineering field matures and will continue to evolve. Join the conversation and share your experiences on what tools and practices that you use in implementing learning engineering and what you envision in the future.
We’ll be meeting via Webex for the community call. (See details below with meeting code and password.) It is scheduled for one hour’s length. Full agenda will be posted here.
Learning Engineering Practices, Tools and ApproachesA few examples of approaches, methods and tools for the application and integration of the learning engineering process:
- Learning Engineering Maturity model
- For appraising an organization’s or enterprise’s maturity in adoption of learning engineering practices, review the criteria in the Generalizable Learning Engineering Adoption Maturity Model.
- Challenge
- Example approaches to determine the challenge and do a needs assessment include Five Whys, Cause and Affect (Fishbone) Analysis, Performance Task Analysis
- Teams
- ICICLE 2024 Conference Learning Engineering is a Team Sport Presentation and Activity on establishing a Learning Engineering Team
- Teaming up to Improve Medical/Healthcare Education: Instructional Design & Learning Engineering, Dina Kurzweil and Karen E. (Beth) Marcellas
- Human Centered Design
- “Applying Human-Centered Engineering Methods to Learning” a Silver Lining for Learning podcast episode, with Janet Kolodner, Jim Goodell, and Sae Schatz
- IDEO Design Thinking Process
- Learning Sciences
- Learning Engineering is Informed by the Learning Sciences presentation, ICICLE 2022 Conference and activity and resource on pages 10-13, ICICLE 2022 Conference Workbook
- Learning Design
- Learning Design Principles: A Toolkit for Design for Evidence-Based Principles, edited by Kathleen McEldoon
- Implementation
- Tracking Decisions
- Learning Engineering Evidence Decision Tracker template and materials, ICICLE 2024 conference
- “Why did we do that?” A Systematic Approach to Tracking Decisions in the Design and Iteration of Learning Experiences, Lauren Totino and Aaron Kessler
- Data
- Data Use and Application throughout the Learning Engineering Process graphic outlines the questions to ask about the collection and application of data
- Technology Standards
