Arrowhead Section Technical Meeting – Applying Staged Faults via Drone on the GNTL
April 21, 2022 @ 5:30 pm - 8:00 pm CDT
Presentation Topic: Applying Staged Faults via Drone on the Great Northern Transmission Line
Presenters: Christian Winter and Kyle Larson (Minnesota Power)
Power system protection systems are designed to isolate lines when unintended contact is made to them. Simulating these conditions is a way to verify they will properly de-energize the line while minimizing the amount of customers impacted. Minnesota Power collaborated with Great River Energy, Manitoba Hydro and others to conduct a real-world test of a new series-compensated 500 kV line by using an Unmanned Aircraft System (drone) to apply a staged fault on the line and will present details.
