Turning 6G Vision into Reality: Full-Duplex, Sub-THz Prototyping & Sensing, and AI/ML-Powered Breakthroughs on SDRs
The ITU has identified full-duplex and sub-THz as key technologies for 6G. After over a decade of research, full-duplex is now entering wireless standards through innovations in passive cancellation (advanced antenna designs and RF circuitry) and AI/ML-powered digital self-interference cancellation. Accurate self-interference channel modeling remains essential for DSP algorithm testing and standardization. In its mono-static form, joint communication and sensing (JC&S) represents another use of full-duplex wireless. Meanwhile, sub-THz must prove its commercial viability and value through applications like JC&S and advancements in semiconductor tech. NI continues to drive 6G innovation via SDR platforms and VST testbeds, collaborating globally to support agile frontend designs across FR1 to FR4. Fraunhofer HHI will share milestones in full-duplex systems, sub-THz front-end development, and 6G long-range outdoor trials, highlighting progress since Germany’s first full-duplex demo in 2014 and the 2022 debut of the world’s first long-range sub-THz D-Band system with analog beamforming.
