Modelling and Design of Smart Radio Environments

In this talk, Professor Jie Zhang will first introduce their pioneering work on Smart Radio Environments back to 2012 in a 2.2 million Euros research project titled “Wireless Friendly Energy Efficient Buildings (WiFEEB)” in which frequency selective surfaces, intelligent walls and reconfigurable intelligent structures were studied. Then, he will give an introduction of their ground-breaking work on the establishment of a theoretical building wireless performance (BWP) evaluation framework that can be used to quantify the wireless performance of a building layout (i.e., given a building design/floorplan, tells how “wireless friendly” it is). Next, he will briefly introduce the progress that they have made in a project titled “AI-powered Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (AIRIS)”. Finally, he will touch on their ongoing work in BWP and draw a conclusion of the realisation of his vision of “Wireless Friendly Energy Efficient Buildings” back to 2010.

Biography

Professor Jie Zhang is the Founder and Chief Scientific Officer of Ranplan Wireless, a publicly listed company on Nasdaq First North, based in Cambridge, U.K. He has held senior academic positions—at Chair or Full Professor level—as well as visiting appointments at Harbin Institute of Technology, Shenzhen, the University of Sheffield, and the University of Cambridge. Ranplan Wireless develops Ranplan Professional, one of the world’s leading digital twin platforms for wireless environments, integrating detailed outdoor and indoor environment modelling, advanced radio channel simulation, and comprehensive wireless system design. Supporting true multi-path ray tracing and ray launching, Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS) modelling, extremely large MIMO (xMIMO), terahertz (THz) communications, and enriched with robust APIs, Ranplan Professional is particularly well-suited for both academic and industrial research into 6G technologies such as RIS, xMIMO, and THz systems. It also enables the study of low-altitude wireless communications, an emerging domain of critical importance. Ranplan’s software is trusted by hundreds of industrial and academic clients, including all of the top five telecom equipment vendors, the world’s largest mobile network operators, and numerous leading universities and research institutions.

Professor Zhang has been a pioneer in the field of small cell and heterogeneous networks since 2005, and has led groundbreaking work on smart radio environments since 2010.
