Grounding Part 2
This presentation on Grounding will be an interactive session, where we’ll explore some of the fundamental principles that keep both people and equipment safe in electrical systems, as well as ensuring signal integrity in everything from microchips to large substations.
We'll dive into the core concept of grounding—what it is, the different types of grounding systems, and how they serve to protect people, property, and equipment. Along the way, we'll also explore how proper grounding techniques help in cleaning up electrical signals, which is critical in high-precision environments.
Through our discussion, I want to leave you with three key takeaways:

No naturally-occurring perfect ground exists— we need to engineer and create one to ensure the safety and effectiveness of our systems.

Inductance is more important than resistance— as grounding systems evolve, understanding the inductive properties becomes crucial for effective grounding.

Everything scales—from microchips to substations— the principles of grounding apply universally, but how we implement them changes depending on the scale of the system.

Biography:
Jerry Hogan has been directly involved with power and power electronics for 40+ years, ands has been in R&D and technical marketing in power electronics and systems at: AT&T Bell Labs, Texas Instruments, Siemens, and Rockwell. Mr. Hogan is a certified R56 installer and a member of the Lightning Protection Institute. Mr. Hogan has a BSEE from the University of Colorado and a MBA from the Chicago Booth School of Business.
