We warmly invite you to join us for a special technical session showcasing the innovative research of two of our distinguished Higher Degree by Research (HDR) students, with a focus on real-world industry applications.

Our session will begin with Dr. Weichong Yao, who will introduce the theoretical foundations behind the design of high-power, high-frequency transformers for isolated DC-DC converters. His presentation will highlight key design concepts, followed by a live demonstration in the lab, where attendees can see his transformer prototype in action.

Next, Mr. Nafis Subhani will present his work on integrating the developed transformer into a compact, high-power, and cost-effective isolated DC-DC converter, specifically designed for renewable energy systems. His talk, titled "Compact, High-Power, Low-Cost Isolated DC-DC Converter Design for Renewable Energy Applications," will explore how advanced hardware design can support sustainable energy solutions.

To conclude the event, we will visit the laboratory where both speakers will demonstrate their hardware implementations and explain their potential for real-world deployment and industry impact.

The session will wrap up with a relaxed networking opportunity, complete with food and light refreshments, giving attendees the chance to connect, discuss, and exchange ideas.

We look forward to welcoming you to an engaging and insightful event!

  Speakers

Simon of Griffith University

Topic:

High-power high-frequency transformer design for isolated DC-DC converters

The first speaker, Weichong Yao, will delve into the theoretical principles underpinning the design of high-power, high-frequency transformers for isolated DC-DC converters. Following his talk, attendees will have the opportunity to visit the laboratory to observe the physical implementation of his high-frequency transformer prototype.

Biography:

Dr. Weichong Yao received the B.Sc. and PhD degrees in electrical and electronic engineering from the School of Engineering and Built Environment, Griffith University, Gold Coast, Australia, in 2024. Currently, he is working as a research fellow at the Queensland Micro- and Nanotechnology Centre, Griffith University, Australia. His research interests include modelling of high-frequency magnetics for power electronics applications like solar, wind, EV charging system etc.

Nafis of Griffith University

Topic:

Compact, high-power low cost isolated DC-DC converter design for renewable energy applications

Our second speaker, Nafis Subhani, will build on this by presenting the integration of the developed transformer into a compact, high-power, and cost-effective isolated DC-DC converter, tailored for renewable energy applications. His talk, titled "Compact, High-Power, Low-Cost Isolated DC-DC Converter Design for Renewable Energy Applications," will highlight the design considerations and performance outcomes.

Biography:

Mr. Nafis Subhani (Graduate Student Member, IEEE) received the M.Sc. degree in power electronics and drives from Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP), Malaysia, in 2019 and worked as a research scientist at the Centre for Smart Grid and Energy Research (CSMER), UTP, Malaysia. Currently he is pursuing his PhD at the School of Engineering and Built Environment, Griffith University, Gold Coast, Australia. He also works as a research fellow at the Queensland Micro- and Nanotechnology Centre, Griffith University, Australia. His research interests include modelling of dc-dc converters, impedance source inverters, electric vehicle charging, and renewable energy systems.
