Sustainable Construction in the Digital Age: Leveraging Digital Twins for Smart Cities
Digital twins are emerging as a transformative technology in the construction sector, playing a pivotal role in the green and digital transition. In her keynote lecture, Prof. Lavinia Chiara Tagliabue from the University of Turin will explore how digital twins can optimize resource management, enhance sustainability, and facilitate informed decision-making throughout the lifecycle of buildings. As cities grapple with the challenges of climate change, including increased greenhouse gas emissions and resource depletion, the construction industry must adopt innovative solutions to promote sustainability. Digital twins enable the simulation of building performance under various scenarios, allowing stakeholders to visualize energy consumption, waste generation, and environmental impacts. Prof. Tagliabue will discuss the integration of digital twins with advanced technologies such as AI and IoT, which can streamline operations and improve efficiency in construction processes. By creating virtual replicas of physical assets, digital twins provide valuable insights into optimizing design and operational strategies that support circular economy principles. The lecture will also emphasize the importance of stakeholder engagement in utilizing digital twins effectively, ensuring that community needs and aspirations are considered in sustainable urban planning. Through case studies and practical examples, Prof. Tagliabue will illustrate how digital twins serve as decision-support tools that not only enhance building performance but also contribute to broader urban sustainability goals. This keynote lecture promises to provide attendees with a comprehensive understanding of the potential of digital twins in fostering a more resilient and sustainable built environment, ultimately guiding the construction sector towards a greener future.
