Design and Development of Flat Panel Phased Array Antennas for Base Station and CubeSat Communication Applications
IEEE Invited Talk on the Topic "Design and Development of Flat Panel Phased Array Antennas for Base Station and CubeSat Communication Applications" by Prof. Satish Kumar Sharma
Professor and Director, Antenna and Microwave Lab (AML), San Diego State University, USA
Abstract
There is a great demand for high-data-throughput, innovative flat-panel phased array antennas for mobile terminals, base stations, and cube-satellite communication applications. In the last decade, beam steering antennas have seen tremendous growth, primarily due to the maturity of silicon beamforming chipsets, and multilayer printed circuit boards. This talk will discuss the theory, design, development, and experimental verification results of various wideband flat panel phased arrays, mainly carried out in the Antenna and Microwave Lab (AML) at San Diego State University. Additionally, the data throughput testing inside the laboratory environment and over-the-air (OTA) will be discussed.
Biography
Satish Kumar Sharma (Fellow, IEEE) received his B.Tech. degree in Electronics Engineering from Kamla Nehru Institute of Technology, Sultanpur, UP, India, in 1991, and his Ph.D. in Electronics Engineering from IIT (BHU), Varanasi, UP, India, in 1997. Dr. Sharma held Post-Doctoral Fellow and Senior Antenna Engineer/Research Associate positions in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, between 1999 and 2006, before joining the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at San Diego State University (SDSU), USA, as an Assistant Professor in 2006. Currently, a Full Professor and Director of the Antenna and Microwave Laboratory (AML), he has authored over 330 publications, holds multiple patents, and coedited influential books in the field. His research focuses on millimeter-wave antennas, beam steering systems, 5G communication technologies, reconfigurable antennas, and more. Dr. Sharma's contributions to the field have been recognized with numerous awards, including the IEEE AP-S Harold A. Wheeler Prize Paper Award and the NSF CAREER Award. He is an accomplished researcher and educator, contributing significantly to advancing antenna technology for modern wireless systems. He is also a Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society (2025-2027).
