What is a hazardous location (hazloc) and what products service these areas?  The National Electrical Code (NEC), article 500 describes a hazloc as an area where the possibility of fire and/or explosion exists. These scenarios can be created with the presence of combustible gases, vapors, dust and/or ignitable fibers or flyings. Of course, an ignition source, such as an open flame, electric arc, spark or a hot surface would be required as well. It is critical to have the right equipment installed in these areas in order to minimize personal safety risk and maximize operational efficiency. This presentation will go into further detail on the principles of hazloc areas, NEC harsh and hazardous area classifications, and the specialty products required to service these areas.
