Evolution of Power System Protection and Life Cycle Management
Power System Protection is critical to the stability, reliability and security of any electrical infrastructure. The power grid dynamics are changing; from a synchronous machine based, unidirectional power flow grid to one of bi – directional power flow with an increasing level of renewable energy. This impacts not only the installed base, but also protection for the future grid. This presentation will look at the evolution for power system protection over the last 100 years and into the future, considering the changing landscape of the grid. It will focus on management of a protection systems over its complete life cycle from design, installation, commissioning and decommissioning / replacement. Providing a strategic insight into how to manage this cycle.

John Wright of GE Vernova UK
Biography:
John Wright received his BEng Honors Degree in electrical engineering from the University of Staffordshire, UK. He has over 30 years’ experience in the protection and control industry and expertise in areas such as R&D, product management, engineering design and application, commissioning, services, innovation, and digitization. Currently he is Principal Engineer & Technical Applications Engineer Leader - Europe, Central Asia & Sub-Saharan Africa at GE VERNOVA. He is also a GE Senior Fellow, Institute of Engineering & Technology Fellow, Cigre B5 UK Regular Member and Recipient of the Cigre B5 Technical Council Award.
