Topic:

Improving Electric Reliability through FLISR

Abstract:

The importance of electric reliability is set to increase as Massachusetts electrifies transportation, heating, and other key areas of modern life. Fault Location, Isolation, and Service Restoration (FLISR) is one approach National Grid is using to reduce the extent and duration of outages.

Self-healing strategies, like FLISR, are not necessarily new for the Electric Industry.  However, low-cost communication networks and other advancements allow for more intelligent schemes and widespread deployment.  This presentation will cover the industry approaches to FLISR and lessons learned from National Grid’s implementation.

Biography:

Ryan Rainville is a lead engineer for Grid Modernization initiatives including FLISR, Volt-VAR Optimization (VVO), and Advanced Distribution Management Systems (ADMS). Prior to joining National Grid in 2022, Ryan worked at American Superconductor (AMSC), ControlPoint Technologies, and Green Mountain Power in various roles supporting power quality, protection, and planning of transmission, distribution, and renewable generation.

Ryan received his B.S in Electromechanical Engineering from Wentworth Institute of Technology.
