Topic:

Echoes of Innovation: Medical Musings From the 1960's

We invite you to a bit of history of biomedical engineering. Wendell, who worked for the USAF School of Aerspace Medicine at Brooks AFB from 1964 to 1972, will share his insights on the evolutin of biomedical engineering during a time when technology was transitioning from vacuum tube to semiconductors.

During this period, NASA was preparing to send a man to the moon, and the USAF had its own aerospace program (MOL). However, there were no personal computers or hand calculators, and medicine knew much about sick people, but wasn't sure how to select healthy individuals for the space program. The USAF School of Aerospace Medicine at Brooks AFB was instrumental in working on this. This talk will be an interesting snapshot of where medical instrumentation was in the 60s.

Biography:

Wendell's first two years in San Antonio were as an engineer for Petty Geophysical. From 1954 to 1972 he was at the USAF School of Aerospace Medicine, Brooks AFB. From 1972 to 2002 he was at Southwest Research Institute. He has been a member of IEEE since its beginning in January, 1963.

He received a BS in physics from Ottawa University, Ottawa, Kansas, in 1960 and an MS in Engineerng from Trinity Universtiy, San Antonio, in1972.  His last office wtih LMAG has been treasurer for the organization.
