Misreading Postmodern Antigone
Marco Bellocchio’s Devil in the Flesh (Diavolo in Corpo)
In the mid-1980s, film director Marco Bellocchio and renegade psychoanalyst Massimo Fagioli cowrote The Devil in the Flesh, a politically and sexually charged film illustrating some of Fagioli's controversial theories. Echoing the anti-Lacanian sentiment popularized by Gilles Deleuze, the film is perhaps best remembered for a scene in which the character Andrea misreads a section of the famous Greek tragedy Antigone. But this scene has itself been frequently misread, opening up the text to questions of feminism, politics, and the representation of Antigone—a figure frequently used and abused in feminist politics. Displaying considerable analytic depth, Misreading Postmodern Antigone considers these divergent readings and what they have to tell us about contemporary society.

The Role of Media and Culture in the Northern Ireland Peace Process
When political opponents Ian Paisley and Martin McGuiness were confirmed as First Minister and Deputy First Minister of a new Northern Ireland executive in May 2007, a chapter was closed on Northern Ireland’s troubled past. A dramatic realignment of politics had brought these irreconcilable enemies together – and the media played a significant role in persuading the public to accept this startling change. The Propaganda of Peace places their role in a wider cultural context and examines a broad range of factual and fictional representations, from journalism and public museum exhibitions to film, television drama and situation comedy. The authors propose a radically different theoretical and methodological approach to the media’s role in reporting and representing. The audience-producer boundary has collapsed in indigenous and ethnic community broadcasting, and this is the first comprehensive study globally to chart the rise of its new relationship. Based on studies of radio and television audiences in Australia, the authors argue that community radio and television worldwide represents an essential service for indigenous and ethnic audiences, empowering them at various levels, fostering ‘active citizenry’ and enhancing the processes of democracy. The authors, former journalists, spent months on the road, travelling tens of thousands of kilometers from urban centres to the most remote regions of the Central Desert to ask why they engage with and adapt local broadcast media. They draw on two decades of primary research material taken from face-to-face interviews and focus-group discussions with audiences. Consequently, Developing Dialogues offers international researchers a new social, cultural and historical perspective on the emergence of the unique Australian community broadcasting sector within the context of other global trends. Three Myths of Internet Governance
Making Sense of Networks, Governance and Regulation
The Internet is a global medium that defies and sometimes even replaces established media, yet our understanding and ideas surrounding it are largely derived from Internet usage in the USA. This book draws on European and African examples to challenge three established myths about the Internet: that the market can decide; that the Internet is different to “legacy” media; and that national governance is unimportant. The study engages with and challenges established Internet policy, extending the range of topics in media studies by analysing media other than newspapers, broadcasting and cinema. Chapters confront claims that a new form of social coordination or network governance is replacing both hierarchical and market systems of governance. Collins examines the Internet's impact on established media of communication and on established regulatory orders at national and global levels. He then digs deeper into the socio-ethical norms of freedom of expression, fairness and equality and collective cultural identity in relation to the Internet. Literary and Theatrical Experiments of New Russian Drama
New Russian Drama began its rise at the end of the twentieth century, following a decline in dramatic writing in Russia that stemmed back to the 1980s. Authors Beumers and Lipovetsky examine the representation of violence in these new dramatic works penned by young Russian playwrights. Performing Violence is the first English-language study of the consequent boom in drama and why this new breed of authors were writing fierce plays, whilst previous generations had preferred poetry and prose. Since 1999 numerous festivals of new Russian drama have taken place, which have brought international recognition to such playwrights as the Presnyakov brothers, Evgeni Grishkovets and Vasili Sigarev. At the same time, young stage directors and new theatres also emerged. New Russian Drama is therefore one of a few artistic and cultural phenomena shaped entirely in the post-Soviet period and this book investigates the violent portrayal of identity crisis of the generation as represented by theatre. Reflecting the disappointment in Yeltsin’s democratic reforms and Putin’s neo-conservative politics, the focus is on political and social representations of violence, its performances and justifications. Performing Violence seeks a vantage point for the analysis of brutality in post-Soviet culture. It is a key text for students of theatre, drama, Russian studies, culture and literature.
