Film International 41: Baghdad Bad and Belgian brothers
Murray Pomerance examines depictions of Arabs in Hollywood movies, from Valentino to Syriana, and figures out what they say about us rather than them. Bert Cardullo has talked to the Belgian Dardenne brothers about their rare brand of realist cinema and their thirty years of filmmaking. Gary McMahon looks at how New York filmmakers, like Wes Anderson and Charlie Kaufman, turned to magical realism to describe their city and make sense of a surreal reality in the aftermath of 9/11. And Angela Tumini traces the issues of national identity and cultural fusion in contemporary Europe in the films of Julio Medem, a Basque director living in Madrid, and Ferzan Ozpetek, Turkish born but living in Rome. All this, plus a packed review section, in our next issue.
