Abstract

This case study documents an innovative costume design exploration task, inspired by costume agency and clown that was developed in the Stage and Screen programme, Whitireia Performing Arts, Te Auaha: NZ Institute of Creativity, Wellington, Aotearoa New Zealand. The brief provides a gamified learning experience which introduces acting students to costume design ideas and strategies. The case study follows actors introduced to devised costume tasks early in the making process and the impact that had on both performance material and design decisions in the staging of two original short theatre pieces. The impact is evidenced through the activation of embodied imagination and the realization of the storytelling potential of objects and materials.
