This article, based on a Ph.D. research I conducted in Brazil, brings into discussion issues of power, hierarchy and exclusion in the Alexander Technique and in the broader somatic field. It takes a closer look at the influence of lineages and personalisms in the context of modern dance, their subsequent rejection in contemporary dance, and their resurgence as somatics became an integral part of the contemporary dance scene. Through this exploration, I intend to shed light on the potential adverse implications of such practices in the field. Following these discussions, I present a series of initiatives taken by different somatic practitioners, which aim to minimize these outcomes. The article claims that to envision a future for our field, it is essential that we first engage in a thoughtful reflection on the gaps and shortcomings we have left behind, before endeavouring to move forward.
