    In 2005, 1 year before Dr Domenico Corrado’s landmark publication on the effect of an ECG inclusive national preparticipation cardiovascular screening programme in Italy,1 Dr Joseph Marek was approached by the mother of a 17-year-old male athlete who recently died of sudden cardiac arrest. She sought his guidance as a respected cardiologist practising in the suburbs of Chicago, Illinois, to find out what could be done to prevent this tragic event from happening to other young athletes in their community. In response, Dr Marek’s practice organised a cardiovascular screening event at a local school using echocardiography. Although no cardiac abnormalities were discovered, this began a passion for supporting his community by screening young athletes for cardiac conditions at risk of sudden death.
