    We appreciate the comments by Hillion et al 1 on our original paper.2 The data presented are very interesting and suggest that P. gingivalis serology positive was not associated to early rheumatoid arthritis (RA) severity in the ESPOIR cohort. They also tested interactions between gender, P. gingivalis serology status and radiological progression. They observed only a trend for interaction between P. gingivalis serology status and radiological progression.3 Since, smoking status and HLA-DRB1 shared epitope are also major risk factors for chronic periodontitis,4 we suggest to Hillion et al 1 to check interactions with smoking and HLA status. In the ESPOIR cohort, level of anti-P. gingivalis was increased in patients who had never smoked and that increased levels of these antibodies were associated with more erosive disease.5 Hillion et al 1 provided only a partial assessment of periodontal status only based on P. gingivalis serology status without assessment of another periodontal germ as Prevotella intermedia.
