Discover the diverse career paths within the civil engineering industry and inspire your teen to become a future architect of our communities.
Students will learn fundamental concepts like structural integrity, load-bearing capacity, and sustainable design, we'll also challenge you to think like a future innovator. Through engaging design challenges, you'll experience aspects of civil engineering firsthand, that could one day lead to a successful career in a STEM field.
At our civil engineering summer program, you won't just be sitting through lectures; you'll collaborate with peers on challenging civil engineering projects under the guidance of our staff and guest speakers. During our engineering summer camp, you will even have the opportunity to witness engineering in action with exclusive behind-the-scenes tours and field trips, observing how real civil engineers tackle complex problems and translate theory into reality.
While civil engineering is the primary focus of this module, our engineering camp also explores other exciting disciplines of engineering. Students can delve into the fundamentals of aerospace engineering, electrical engineering, and even mechanical engineering, which may help students discover their unique engineering passions.
Our Civil Engineering Projects:
At the TryEngineering Summer Institute, we prioritize hands-on learning. Lectures are just the beginning; the real excitement lies in our engaging projects and challenges. Our civil engineering module includes a series of exciting challenges: the Bridge Engineering Challenge, where students design and build bridges to test their structural integrity; and the Design Think Challenge, where students tackle real-world problems like traffic congestion or water scarcity, developing innovative and environmentally friendly solutions. These projects not only help students grasp the fundamental principles of civil engineering, but also develop crucial skills like problem-solving, teamwork, and creative thinking , which is essential for success in any STEM field.
Bridge Engineering Challenge
Delve into the exciting world of bridge engineering during our our civil engineering component! Students will explore key concepts in bridge design, learning how different materials and structural principles impact a bridge's ability to withstand heavy loads. They will construct bridges of increasing complexity, experimenting with various materials to discover the most effective designs. This is a highlight of our civil engineering camp module, consistently ranked as the most popular activity by our campers. The winning team, recognized for their innovative and and successful bridge design, will even enjoy a celebratory pizza party! If you're searching for engaging civil engineering projects for kids, look no further!
Learning Objectives:
- Civil Engineering Principles: Students will demonstrate their ability to apply civil engineering principles and key concepts such as how bridges support weight, how different materials react to stress, and the importance of strong foundations.
- Problem-Solving and Critical Thinking Skills: Through the bridge-building challenge, students will learn to identify and troubleshoot design flaws, adapt their plans as needed, and work collaboratively to overcome obstacles.
- Foster an Interest in STEM Fields: By engaging in hands-on civil engineering activities, students will develop a deeper appreciation for the principles of civil engineering and potentially spark a lifelong interest in STEM fields.
Design Think Challenge
Experience the power of design thinking! This innovative approach, developed at Stanford University, provides a structured framework for solving real-world problems. At our engineering camp, students will embark on a journey through the entire Design Thinking process. They'll learn to identify and define real-world problems, frame them as "How Might We..." challenges, brainstorm and develop creative solutions, and bring their ideas to life by creating prototypes. To showcase their creativity and entrepreneurial spirit, teams can even participate in our own presentation competition, where they'll develop compelling pitches to present their solutions to a panel of judges. This hands-on experience will equip students with valuable problem-solving and innovation skills that they can apply to various aspects of their lives.
Learning Objectives:
- Real World Problem Solving: Students will demonstrate their ability to effectively navigate the stages of Design Thinking, from identifying and defining a problem to developing and prototyping potential solutions.
- Critical Thinking Skills: Students will learn to think creatively, generate innovative ideas, and critically evaluate their solutions, considering factors like feasibility, user needs, and potential impact.
- Communication & Presentation Skills: Through our presentation competition, students will develop their ability to effectively communicate their ideas to an audience, articulate the value of their solutions, and persuasively present their work to others.
