Monitoring
In general, the acute intoxication period occurs within the first 24 to 48 hours. It is during this time that the risk for acute decompensation and respiratory failure seems to be at its highest.
Given the difficulty in predicting which exposures will lead to poorer outcomes, it is recommended to observe patients during the acute intoxication period. Observation may require intensive care unit admission. Patients are likely safe for discharge with strict return precautions, if they demonstrate consistent improvement of symptoms.[34]
Most patients recover fully from marine toxin exposures. Some patients will have persisting neurological symptoms for days or weeks, but can be expected to recover fully.
