Headache, migraine, and structural brain lesions and function: population based Epidemiology of Vascular Ageing-MRI study

BMJ 2011; 342 doi: https://doi.org/10.1136/bmj.c7357 (Published 18 January 2011) Cite this as: BMJ 2011;342:c7357

Rapid Response:

Migraine and cerebral white matte changes

Previous small studies showed that patients with migraine are at an
increased risk for white matter lesions, typically multiple, small,
punctate hyperintensities in the deep or periventricular white matter.
Previous research also showed that migraine is associated with subclinical
brain infarcts in the posterior circulation. This study confirm that
migraine, predominantly migraine with aura, is associated with the
presence of silent infarct or white matter changes on brain MRI.The
strength of this study is population based study with large number of
study subjects.
