Kenneth Evans (“Ken”) was a GP and trainer working in Hildenborough, Kent. He spent much of the war in Hambledon, Hampshire, with his aunt, Eileen. Margery, his mother, was widowed in 1942 as a result of a training accident in the Royal Air Force. Another aunt, Elise, suggested Ken take a scholarship to Christ’s Hospital school in Horsham. Successful, Ken discovered the joy of cold showers, early morning runs, and half term family visits. Margery and Ken’s sister, Mary, would regularly take several buses from Twickenham to see him.

When Ken took up general practice in Hildenborough in 1964, he joined a two handed practice with four premises. One partner immediately took a two week holiday, leaving Ken, totally new to …
