Stay home if “clinically extremely vulnerable”

People in England who are clinically extremely vulnerable will receive letters urging them to stay at home as much as possible, including not going to work if they cannot work at home, and to leave the house only to exercise outdoors or to attend health appointments. The list now includes people with chronic kidney disease (stage 5), those undergoing dialysis, and adults with Down’s syndrome. But children who were asked to shield in March do not need to shield this time, as their risk of becoming unwell from covid-19 is low. (Full story doi:10.1136/bmj.m4292)

Deaths are still “likely to exceed” first wave

The UK government admitted to errors in slides showing forecasts of daily covid-19 hospital admissions and deaths that were used to support a second lockdown in England, but it said that the overall insights were unchanged. The slides suggested that daily deaths in England could reach 800 by 8 December, but data showed that they could be as high as 1500. The projection is now that, at the most, daily deaths would just exceed 1000 deaths by 8 December. Experts called for the government to be more transparent with data.
