Small studies suggested that low doses of testosterone improved symptoms in women suffering from depression. But, as so often happens, the hypothesis didn’t survive testing in a larger trial. In women aged 21-70 with treatment-resistant major depression, eight weeks of treatment with transdermal testosterone cream was no better than placebo in reducing depressive symptoms, lessening fatigue, or improving sexual function (Am J Psych doi:10.1176/appi.ajp.2020.19080844).
